In a recent press conference, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov denied GM Magnus Carlsen’s request to have the 2014 World Championship match postponed at a later date.
The match which is scheduled to be held in Sochi, Russia from November 5 to 24 will continue as scheduled. Ilyumzhinov further stated that if Carlsen does not show, he will be forfeiting the match.
With no official press release from the Norweigan’s camp as of this writing, opinions vary among the chess community as to why Carlsen wants to postpone the match. Some cite the venue as a poor choice or that politics is involved, but until Carlsen speaks out, nothing is certain.
Carlsen is scheduled to fight GM Viswanathan Anand, from whom he won the World Title in 2013.
