The month of August ended on a good note for GM Fabiano Caruana as he won his fifth win in the fifth round of the 2014 Sinquefield Cup in Louisvelle, MO.
Playing the black pieces against the world’s 5th highest rated player, US GM Hikaru Nakamura, Caruana seemed to be having a hard time defending his position in the Slav, Brayer Variation opening. But as both players maneuvered to dominate the center, Caruana was able to continue his winning streak after 67 moves with him having two rooks and a dark-squared bishop fighting against Nakamura’s Queen.
The day also saw both GM Marcus Carlsen win against GM Levon Aronian, and GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave victorious over GM Veselin Topalov.
