Carlsen versus Anand, Round 4 ends in a draw

The 4th round of this year’s World Chess Championship being held in Sochi, Russia ended in a draw today.

After suffering defeat yesterday, Magnus Carlsen had a hard time launching a successful attack against the challenger and former world champion Viswanathan Anand.  Employing the Sicilian Defense, Anand kept the game more or less equal, gaining a slight advantage in the middle game.

After trading off all the major pieces, except for the queen, Carlsen was able to recover and gain the initiative.  Although Carlsen was a pawn ahead, Anand was able to push his isolated, passed pawn to d4.  With the initiative but without any other major piece to help attack black’s king, Carlsen had no other choice but to settle for a draw.
