Magnus Carlsen wins Tata Steel Chess 2016

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has won the 78th Tata Steel Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee.  In today’s 13th and final round, the Norwegian grandmaster drew with Liren Ding, letting him maintain a 1.0 point lead against both Ding and Fabiano Caruana.  This is Carlsen’s 5th time to win the event.

The 99-move match started in the Ruy Lopez .  The queens came off the board on the 14th move and the game was more or less equal most of the time with a slight advantage favoring white.  By the 46th move, it looked like Carlsen was going to win with his white-square bishop and rook versus Ding’s rook and two pawns.  Despite the seeming disadvantage, Ding fought on and was able to force stalemate in the end.

With the Challengers group, Adhiban Baskaran, Eltaj Safarli and Alexey Dreev are all tied in first place with 9.0 points each.  Baskaran is promoted to the Tata Steel Masters group for next year’s tournament because he had the best games among the players in the Tata Steel Challengers.
